Invitation
Belgium / Germany, November 2011
Dear member,
It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 14th European Conference of the ICJW.
In Berlin, East meets West, past meets present, memory of destruction meets renewal and revival. The city will be an inspiration not only to consider the important contribution of Jewish women to Jewish life in Germany and Europe in the past, but, also to discuss from a contemporary perspective, the tremendous influence that political and social upheavals have had on European Jewish life after 1990. We will analyze the impact of migration and integration on European Jewish identities, focusing on the transmission of our heritage to our children, as well as new European developments and the rise of new anti-Semitism.
Through keynote speeches by outstanding scholars and many parallel workshops, the Conference will deal with topics like the significance of Jewish education for sustaining Jewish identity, Jewish women’s status in a European society with a pluralistic view, human and civil rights and with creative ways to build a liveable future for the next generation, based on our heritage. The conference will take place in the historical Oranienburger Synagogue, the Centrum Judaicum in Berlin, from April 29 to May 1, 2012. The year 2012 will also mark the 100th anniversary of ICJW, which started last century in Germany dealing with trafficking problems of European Jewish girls. We hope that the conference will be an inspiration for the participating affiliates and will build bridges that will contribute to a better understanding of different cultures and different historical backgrounds in order to strengthen the communication and cooperation between European Jewish women and to keep transmitting our Jewish heritage.
We look forward to seeing you in Berlin!
Sincerely Yours
Liliane Seidman European Chairwoman of ICJW
Cornelia Maimon-Levi Chairwoman Jüdischer Frauenbund in Deutschland
