Description: In July 2000, the Republic of Italy proclaimed January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a Day of Remembrance to commemorate Italian Jews who were victims of the Holocaust, and all those who had risked their own lives to try and save others. In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly designated the same day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
On January 26, 2012, Italians all around the world will mark this day with commemoration ceremonies. In Los Angeles, at the initiative of the Italian Consulate General and the Italian Cultural Institute, along with AJC, three institutions will simultaneously and publically read aloud the 8,000 names of Italian Jewish victims of the Holocaust: Milken Community High School of Stephen S. Wise Temple (one of the largest Jewish day schools in the country), the acclaimed Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, and USC Hillel, USC’s center for Jewish life
