Congressional Gold Medal to Raoul Wallenberg

Tomorrow, August 4, 2012, Sweden celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Raoul Wallenberg, a man whose life of self-sacrifice saved tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews from their extermination camp fate. Tomorrow we also pay tribute to JDC’s life saving role in the heroic mission that Wallenberg undertook.

On July 26th 2012 President Obama signed into law a bill bestowing the Congressional Gold Medal on Raoul Wallenberg.

JDC Receives Prestigious Award

Each year the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) awards one or more grants to further the cause of Jewish family history research. The award honors Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern (1915–1994) who is widely considered to be the dean of contemporary Jewish genealogy.

JDC was one of two recipients of this year's grant. The award has been given in order to grow the JDC Archives Names Index of individuals who have received life-saving aid from the organization.

JDC Announces First Archives Fellows

Two historians named inaugural recipients of the Fred and Ellen Lewis JDC Archives Fellowship.
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) announced today that historians Mary Fraser Kirsh and Susan Gilson Miller were named the first Fred and Ellen Lewis JDC Archives Fellows.

Archives on a 20th-Century Diaspora Are Being Put Online

JDC Archives is proud to announce that the launch of its website on March 3, 2012 was covered by the New York Times front page section. The article by Joseph Berger conveys the depth and breadth of our 97 year old history, and the great importance of our digitization efforts, which allow our collections to be accessed online from anywhere in the world.

JDC Oral Histories in the Classroom

Throughout the 1980s, retired JDC executive staff member Herbert Katzki carried out an ambitious program to capture the oral histories of veteran JDC staff who had served overseas during the preceding four decades. During his 61 years of service, Katzki led efforts to rescue and provide relief for Jews during and after the Holocaust. The oral history project recorded the experiences of 55 of his JDC staff colleagues and lay leaders.


New Holocaust Museum in Brazil


JDC Archives congratulates the Jewish Federation of Parana and the Associacao Casa de Cultura Beit Yaacov on the inauguration of the Holocaust Museum of Curitiba, the first institution of its kind in Brazil. Curitiba is the capital of the Brazilian state of Parana, with some 1,000 Jewish families.


JDC Archives Announces First Fellowship Program

The JDC Archives is pleased to announce the establishment of The Fred andEllen Lewis JDC Archives Fellowship, funded by a generous gift to the JDCArchives from the estate of Ellen Lewis, a former JDC employee Fellowships will be awarded each year to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives, either in New York or Jerusalem, in the field of general or Jewish history, humanitarian assistance, or related areas.


Survivors and Students Connect Over “Our Shared Legacy”

JDC co-sponsored an event in NY with Selfhelp Community Services, where high school students from the Yeshiva of Flatbush in Brooklyn, NY, volunteered at a Café Europa program, a festive social gathering of Holocaust survivors. Generations mingled and conversations ranged from extracurricular school activities to poignant stories and memories of survival during the war.
