“Federal cabinet decides to increase compensation pensions for victims of Nazi persecution. Federal Minister of Finance
Olaf Scholz assured in conversation with Claims Con that decades of successful cooperation for the benefit of the Holocaust survivors should be continued,” tweeted the German Finance Ministry after meeting with the Claims Conference team.
Claims Conference Special Negotiator Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, Executive Vice President Greg Schneider, and Assistant Executive Vice President Karen Heilig met with Olaf Scholz, the current German Finance Minister and most likely the incoming Chancellor of Germany.
Minister Scholz was in Washington, DC for a one-day meeting and we were very pleased he took time to fit our team into his hectic schedule, reflecting his government’s commitment to continued care for Holocaust survivors.
The conversation focused on three specific areas of partnership, how they have led to remarkable achievements for Holocaust survivors, and the ongoing and increasing needs:
Compensation; given that the population of survivors is waning, the next year or two are truly the last opportunity to close this chapter with the dignity the survivors deserve. The Claims Conference focused on the need for the German government to commit to ongoing compensation for every survivor and in amounts that areappropriate and dignified.
Home Care; while the number of survivors will unfortunately decrease, the funds needed to allow those still with us to live in dignity will increase.
Education; the Claims Conference recently conducted a number of surveys identifying an alarming lack of knowledge of the Holocaust, This is a global matter of significant concern. We need to work together with the German government tosupport and develop education opportunities to ensure the memory of the victims and survivors is preserved and the overwhelming resurgence of antisemitism is addressed.
During the conversation, Minister Scholz affirmed the German government's ongoing commitment to Holocaust survivors and preserving the memory of the Shoah.

Konferencija o zahtjevima usredotočila se na potrebu da se njemačka vlada
