Attached
you will find the message sent by NCJW-USA
speaking out on the recent arrest and
treatment of Anat Hoffman
when she was praying at the Kotel. I am keenly aware
of the
fact that ICJW does not generally make statements such
as this without
first contacting the members of the Israeli
affiliate who serve on our Executive
Committee and
soliciting their opinions. This is entirely consistent with the
view expressed at past executive Committee meetings
in which it was clearly
stated that any statement which
referred explicitly to a situation which
happened in an
affiliate's country may not be publicized without that
affiliate's consent. Therefore until such time as I hear
from our Israeli
colleagues, I am not issuing a statement
in our own name. However, I felt that
the statement made
by our United States affiliate, NCJW-USA, may well reflect
the opinions of many of our members. No matter what
our own religious views on
this or any other situation may be,
I do not believe that ANY of us believe that
physical harassment or maltreatment of women
is acceptable. I do hope you
concur.

...Forgive
me- but I am horrified that our Israel affiliate members were not out on
the street demonstrating
against
this shocking treatment of women
Having
set up an ICJW Women’s Human Rights committee way back in 1999 the time has come
for action
Perhaps
when we are a large number from around the world in Jerusalem in May we might
think of
holding
a demonstration to show that ICJW is really serious about Jewish Women’s
rights
