The European Jewish Congress held its Council Meeting on Sunday 5th May 2013, in the scope of the 14th General Assembly of the World Jewish Congress in Budapest.
The Council meeting was led and opened by Chairman Vivian Wineman and attended by around 40 Jewish leaders from across Europe. In light of the meeting being held in Budapest, there was a particular focus on the far-Right in Hungary.
EJC President Moshe Kantor thanked Vivian Wineman for initiating the meeting and clearly outlined some of the current key challenges and concerns faced by Jews and Jewish leaders in Europe. He particularly focused on the situation in Hungary and Greece and made it clear that it was the responsibility of these governments to reject and combat anti-Semitism in their countries.
Peter Feldmajer, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary, welcomed all the Council members and thanked them for their presence and support.
Items on the agenda included; fighting anti-Semitism through legal tools, the image of Israel in Europe and the issue of BDS campaigns as well as interfaith dialogue
