Erdogan blames Israel for Egypt coup
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan has accused Israel of being behind the coup in Egypt. According to Turkish sources, Mr Erdogan met members of his party on Tuesday and said: "Israel is behind the coup in Egypt, we have evidence." Reportedly, Mr Erdogan also mentioned an unnamed French Jewish academic who, according to the Turkish leader, said that the Muslim Brotherhood would not gain leadership because "democracy is not the ballot box".
Despite efforts at reconciliation, ties have been discontinued between Turkey and Israel since the flotilla incident in 2010.
odgovor Izraelskog premijera
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's office has blasted comments from Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan blaming Israel for the military coup and crisis in Egypt, the Jerusalem Post reports.
An official from the prime minister's office said comments made by Erdogan were "nonsense."
The Turkish premier, who has a history of anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic remarks, blamed Israel on Tuesday for the events that brought about Morsi's ouster.
“Who is behind [the ouster]? There is Israel,” Erdo?an said at a meeting of his AK Party in Ankara. “We have [a] document in our hands.”
Erdogan's rant was not worthy of a response, Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Tuesday.
"This is a statement well worth not commenting on," Palmor said.
Erdogan's comments come just a few weeks after he blamed unrest in his own country on an “interest rate lobby," widely believed to be a metaphor for western Jewish businessmen. He also likened Zionism in the past to fascism, and has routinely accused Israel of waging a campaign of “genocide” against Palestinians.
