New app maps Ioannina's Jewish heritage
The memory of the Jews of Ioannina in northern Greece, one of Europe’s oldest Jewish communities, is set to be revived with the unlikely help of a Canadian-designed mobile app. The app is currently in the final stages of development at Vancouver's Simon Fraser University, thanks to a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Prije sedamdeset godina Židovi u gradu Ioannina , na sjeverozapadu Epira , su okruženi od nacista, strpani u vagone i deportirani. Od 1.670 muškaraca, žena i djece , koji su pokupljeni iz svojih domova i poslani u Auschwitz-Birkenau, manje od njih 200 je preživjelo rat, smrtnost je bila gotovo 90%. Jednim jedinim potezom su nacistički okupatori razorili jednu od najstarijih židovskih zajednica, čija povijest seže u antična vremena i kulturu grčkih Romaniota, čija se kultura razlikuje od kulture Židova u Solunu koji su sefardski Židovi i govore ladino. Organizirati će se na dan deportacuije 25. ožujka serija događanja u Ioanini, ukllučujući koncert i religijski obred.

The Jewish community of Thessaloniki is suing Germany for the return of a ransom paid during the Nazi occupation of Greece. The papers were filed Friday in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, according to the community’s president, David Saltiel....
“It is the end of a long process,” Saltiel said. “We have finished with the courts in Greece and now we hope that the Human Rights Court can help restore the ransom money that the Jewish community paid to Germany.”
