For the first time in the history of Austria, Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz hosted the first ever official Rosh Hashanah reception for members of Austria’s Jewish community at the Federal Chancellery.
In welcoming approximately 140 prominent representatives from local Jewish communities and organizations and wishing them “shana tova”, Chancellor Kurz reiterated his government’s strong commitment to securing and strengthening Jewish life in Austria: “The Jewish community is and will remain an integral part of Austrian society and it is been long overdue to symbolically recognize this fact through an official New Year’s Reception according to the Jewish calendar. We will make this a tradition, hopefully to be carried on by my successors in office.”

Chancellor Kurz went on to say: “The events of 1938 to 1945 will permanently be remembered as the darkest period in Austrian history. The wrong that was done to tens of thousands of our fellow citizens remains a lasting burden on the conscience of our nation. As a politician and citizen who was born well after these atrocities took place, I regard it as my particular responsibility to not only do my very best to keep the memory alive, but far more to rigidly confront antisemitism and racism, wherever they may occur.”

The Rosh Hashanah reception was attended amongst others by the president of Vienna’s Jewish Community, Oskar Deutsch, the Chief Rabbi of Austria, Arie Folger, EJC-Vice-President Ariel Muzicant, Ambassador of the State of Israel Talya Lador-Fresher, president of WIZO in Austria, Karin Maier-Winter as well as the president of the Austrian Friends of Israel, Daniel Kapp. Attending furthermore was government minister Gernot Blümel, as well as members of parliament involved with relations to Israel and the Jewish community here in Austria, Michaela Steinacker and Martin Engelberg.
